Poetry

I used to say that I rarely wrote poetry. I meant really rarely. And by ‘poetry’ I meant something I’d show to anyone else. That’s all changed now - I seem to be writing more poetry than anything else, and really getting into the performance poetry side of things. Of course, like many people, I used to write bad and depressing and ‘experimental’ (and sometimes all three) poetry when I was a teenager, none of which will see the light of day unless you can convince me that you need a really good laugh... However, I was inspired by the excellent Monkey Kettle to give poetry a go as an adult and, when they published Killing Phase a few years ago, I was inspired to keep going (slowly). Then, after a couple more (like City of Exiles and Cohesive) made it, Killing Phase was requested for publication in the all-new Monkey Kettle anthology, Now, That’s What I Call Monkey Kettle: 1999-2004 v. 1, available from Amazon (click here to order).

(Poems with an “MK” next to them have been accepted for publication in Monkey Kettle.)

I am now part of a poetry collective (as it were) in Milton Keynes: Poetry Kapow!, a group dedicated to performing live poetry (and organising events for other people to perform live poetry at). If you fancy coming along to see me perform in person, check out my Calendar. And you can learn a little about my performance history here.

You can now hear (and see) me performing and getting down with my bad self, poetry-wise, in the slowly growing section hesitantly entitled “Media Bits”.

Breath of the Soul Inspired by the piece of the same name by James Lee Byars
Kaleidoscope (MK)This used to be called “Colourbeat” until one of its fans pointed out that it’s a crappy title for a pretty good poem... Thanks, Danni! :)
Moondance Do you know what the moon means?
In Darkness Inspired by a Valentine’s Day poetry night - Raising the Awen in Northampton
Turning Point A poem for Midsummer Solstice and anyone who’s ever done this...

Killing Phase (MK)

pun intended

Solo inspired by the kind of poetry we were hearing at a LOT of poetry evenings in January and February 2009.

City Of Exiles (MK)

less depressing (but more cynical?)

Secret Name (a riddle)

heading back to my ‘experimental’ roots?

Cohesive (MK)

a true story

Selfish Bastard (MK)

another old story, and not necessarily about who you think it might be... (third-place finalist in the inaugural Monkey Kettle Poetry Slam - accidentally, I swear!)

Personal Poetry I found this recently in a clearout, written while cycling to my second job one Cardiff Thursday evening and hastily scribbled down after I got back, so possibly not as good as the original. It’s clearly performance poetry, and is in response to someone else’s poem where they assert that poetry’s not personal (not without some measure of irony, I’m sure) and some of you will remember who that is...
small, pale people (mk) It’s entirely up to you whether you think this is an attack on you.
Poetry is personal, but mine is always in the fashion that it’s all about me!

Aspire

an old story

Put It Like...

allegory is great, isn’t it?

It Ends
